Altars to An Unknown God:
1. Altar of anti-institutionalism. (Anti-abortion, anti-homosexual, Republican). They see Christianity as having less to do with Jesus than with the institution of the church. They are seeking God, but lost confidence in organized religion that God can be found there. Spiritual is anti-institutional.
2. Experience. They want to know something, not just know about something. Popularity of Xfiles, paranormal, etc. Want something more than themselves.
3. Spirituality. Prayer
4. Community – Howard Dean.
5. Suffering
