Our faith
What
we believe...
Beliefs
We at the Camarillo Church of Christ want to share with you a bit
about who we are and what we believe. Our understanding of ourselves
and the truth about God is always imperfect, and it is really to Jesus
that we point you and not to ourselves. We all are on a journey of
discovery. However, here are some of our convictions and how we came
to believe them.
Our Convictions
We believe in God, the Father Almighty, the Creator of heaven and
earth, and in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord.
We believe Jesus was conceived of the Holy Spirit, born of Mary, a
virgin, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was
buried. On the third day He arose again, defeating death.
He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father
Almighty, and He will come again to take those who love and trust
Him, to redeem His creation, and to judge the living and the dead.
We believe in The Holy Spirit, the church universal, the communion
of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body,
and life everlasting.
Our History
We are a Church of Christ. Primarily, we mean that we are a church
that belongs first and solely to Jesus Christ. However, we are connected
by faith and tradition to a larger group who calls themselves the
Church of Christ. The Churches of Christ have their immediate roots
in the American Restoration Movement. In the early nineteenth century,
several independent movements began which longed for the unity of
all Christians under the authority of Scripture. It was in this conviction
that these groups of Christians sought to be just Christians. As these
movements grew, they began encountering each other and united on the
plea that Christians return to the Scripture as their source of faith
and practice. They wanted to own no name but Christ's, and, as much
as possible, to be like the earliest churches in organization, doctrine,
faith, and zeal.
They did not claim to be the only Christians, but they did claim to
be Christians only. They invited people from all the denominations
to set aside the barriers which divided them and unite under the authority
of the Bible and our one Lord.
While realizing that any attempt to become a church belonging to Christ
will involve imperfection and human struggle, we share that hope and
plea. We do not claim perfect understanding of the Bible, but we do
long to be a church that belongs to Christ and is maturing in Him
in every way. We, like other Churches of Christ, have no denominational
organization to which we are accountable. We have elders, deacons,
and other ministers to lead us; but we are convinced that all Christians
are called to be ministers of Jesus according to their spiritual gifts
given by the Holy Spirit.
Our Worship
We seek, in the presence of God's Spirit and the guidance by the truth
of His Word, to praise God. The psalmists of Israel believed that
to worship God in the temple was to come into His presence. We believe
that God is present in our worship and eagerly anticipates our praises.
Our worship, though thoughtfully planned, is intentionally simple.
It is not our goal to entertain, but it is our goal to fully give
ourselves in body, mind, and heart to worship God. Our worship will
consist of prayers to God, an offering, the reading of Scripture,
silence and meditation, praise through singing, and the Lord's Supper.
Let us tell you about a few unique traditions of our church.
Singing
One of the first things you will notice is that our singing is entirely
congregational and un-accompanied by instrumental music. We do so
because of our convictions about worship. First, we believe that worship
is to involve the participation of the whole church as much as possible.
Second, worship honors the historical traditions of our past, including
the Restoration tradition of unaccompanied singing and the tradition
of the Christian church for the first several centuries of Christian
worship. It is a tradition we honor, believe in, and love. We hope
you will come to love it too. We believe that God works through songwriters
in every age to provide us with worshipful and thoughtful songs, and
we attempt to blend traditional and contemporary hymns to the glory
of God.
Preaching
The proclamation of the good news of the gospel of Christ is an element
of our worship. Preaching is an opportunity to proclaim Jesus through
a variety of Old and New Testament texts. The primary objective of
preaching is not instructional but experiential. Our classes provide
in-depth examination and instruction in Scripture. The objective of
preaching is to help you hear and experience the promises and demands
of the gospel in your contemporary situation.
The Lord's Supper
Each Sunday we share in the Lord's Supper. Although customary in our
tradition, this is much more than custom. Jesus instituted this meal
with His disciples on the night of His arrest as part of the Passover
meal. Taking of the unleavened bread and "fruit of the vine"
in remembrance of our Lord is His command and gift to us. In keeping
this meal regularly, we find an opportunity for communion with our
Lord and one another, an opportunity for reflection and transformation,
and an opportunity to experience the death of Christ for us until
He returns.
Ministry
We believe that every Christian is graced by The Holy Spirit for ministry.
Ministry may include traditional services such as leadership, preaching,
teaching children, serving the sick, or hospitality. These ministries
also may be non-traditional and build upon the passion and interests
God has given you. Ministry is done in every context in which the
Christians find themselves, from the office to home to church. It
is our desire to pray and discern with you the gifts of ministry God
has given you for service in the church and the world.
Conversion
The process of conversion to Christ is the beginning point of your
Christian journey. We believe that letting go of all the things and
people you are depending on for your salvation, and turning to trust
God solely as the one who can save you and give you a new life is
the initial step in this process. Once you trust Him, you will confess
Jesus as Lord. We believe that baptism is the central event by which
we demonstrate our trust, participate in the death, burial, and resurrection
with Christ, and contact His saving power. The gift of The Holy Spirit
is given at baptism. Following New Testament and historical precedent,
we practice adult immersion baptism only. Baptism is the beginning
point of a journey of conversion whereby we grow in the grace and
knowledge of our Savior until our character is formed in His likeness.
Becoming a Member of The Lord's church
You may become a member of The Lord's church by indicating this desire
to an elder or minister, who will then meet with you and your family
to discuss your spiritual journey and how you can join The Lord's
community of faith.

The
Gospel Maybe
you've reached the time in your life when you're beginning to sense
how big the real issues are: how wounded and scarred people are,
how hopeless and powerless many feel; how tortured and twisted our
relationships often are; how we have hurt those whom we love including
our kids; how out of control our sexuality sometimes is; how fragile
our families are; how deeply almost everyone hurts.
The truth is, we are all so needy. So hungry. You'll never know
this about the other guy; he will never tell you. This is too deep.
We each need so desperately to be wrapped up in a love we can trust,
a love that heals us, comforts us, assures us, and adores us. You
can picture a loving parent nurturing, protecting, and affirming;
but many children never got that, and even the best parents could
only do it imperfectly. They too were wounded.
So we spend the rest of our lives looking for it. Maybe we marry,
and now we expect this perfect love from our husband or wife. Or
maybe we've found the perfect friend, a dream friend. Now we will
be loved. But guess what! It doesn't happen, because they're as
hurt and hungry and needy as we are.
So we get angry and bitter, or more likely guarded and protective.
Maybe we look to be filled up at work, or by the guys at the bar
or the girls at the club, or by our last favorite hobby. But it
never happens; so we build walls around ourselves, or we find some
way to numb ourselves, or we self-destruct.
Meanwhile a Dark Force seeps into our souls, telling us that we
are somehow by someone accused. The consequences of our decisions
and actions are piling up against us. In the scales of justice,
we owe a debt and our wrongness overwhelms us and begins to immobilize
us. We stand accused. We try to forget it. We settle for making
it through the day or making it through the night or making it to
the weekend. But every time we stop and look - stop and really feel
- the darkness and hunger are still there.
The truth is that our neediness can only be met by returning home
to our loving Father God who gave life to each of us. In fact, the
hunger within you is the homesickness of the soul longing for its
true home. Now as you turn again homeward, God will wrap you up
in love. He will run to you when you are still a long way off. When
you are feeling lost, all alone out in the wilderness, He is out
looking for you. He is delighted by you. All this we know from the
birth and life and teachings of Jesus of Nazareth. And this loving
Father God bleeds for us. That we learn at the cross. Once in human
history, God stepped out from behind all the books about Him and
loved us enough to become one of us and die for us. Moreover, He
died by the most excruciating death imaginable - crucifixion - and
in His very last hours He forgave even His executioners. All this
happened so that we could know deep down inside - as bedrock certainty
- that at the heart of the universe there is forgiveness and sacrificial
love rather than accusation. Now knowing this, we can learn to trust
the life our Father God gives us and the life to which He calls
us. And the Dark Force of accusation, fear, and doubt recedes. All
along it was Satan, and not God, who is the Great Accuser.
What God now offers you is forgiveness, the feeling you had as a
child when you woke up each morning feeling fully alive and innocent.
It can be that way again. You can start over. Whoever you are, whatever
you've done, you can start over. You will find yourself increasingly
empowered by the Spirit of God in your inner being. And you will
be able to do immeasurably more than you have ever imagined before.
Astonishingly, however, there is even more to this good news. Jesus
did not stay dead. He was resurrected, confirming within history
what thoughtful people have always known. Death is not the end.
There is so much more to being alive. And now Jesus offers to us
the sure confidence of resurrection beginning in our lives here
and now. Lives are resurrected. Families are resurrected. Friendships
are resurrected. Communities are resurrected. Trust and hope and
love are resurrected. For the Christian, this is foundational truth.
As your life is transformed by this Story, you will want to tell
others. And you will want to form communities with others who have
learned these things. These will be communities dedicated to living
and teaching the ways of Jesus.
Consequently, these communities will be based on trust. They will
be filled with such grace that we will learn to be completely honest
with one another even about the things that may have once shamed
us. These communities will be held together by forgiveness, reconciliation,
and love. They will renounce the ways of power, control, and domination.
And they will channel our energies toward feeding the hungry, inviting
strangers in, seeking justice for the oppressed, looking after the
sick, even visiting those in prison. Through these communities we
will learn to celebrate God's goodness in a world of marvelous complexity,
diversity, and mystery. And we will play our part in God's loving
intention to save the world through Jesus. These communities are
called churches. They are not institutions but living and growing
communities of fellow sinners, all saved by the grace of our Savior,
and seeking to be God's people in the world until all things are
brought together and made perfect again in the Kingdom of God. That
is the best news you could ever hear, and it has the power to change
your life.
